Abdul Razzaq narrated that, “A Jewish woman brought to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam a roasted sheep that she had poisoned, while he was in Khyber. Our beloved Prophet asked, What is this? She said, a gift, being careful not to say that it was from charity so that he would not eat it. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam and Sahabah (his companions) ate from the sheep, then our beloved Prophet said, “Stop eating”. He said to the woman, ‘Did you poison this sheep?’ She said, “Who told you that” ? He said, this bone,’ meaning the ewe’s leg that he had in his hand. She said, “Yes”. He said, ‘Why?’ She said, I thought that if you were a liar, the people would be relieved from you. However, if you were a true Prophet, it would not harm you.’ Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam then used Hijama or cupping therapy thrice on the KAHIL (upper part of his back) and commanded that his Companions do the same. Yet, several of them died.”

Practice Hijama or Cupping Therapy – Islamic History, Types & Benefits

Dry Cupping

History of Hijama or Cupping Therapy

Hijama, more popularly known as cupping, is a natural treatment that has a very long history. Practice hijama this natural treatment can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Chinese and Middle East. However, the establishment of hijama was done by Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.W. The practice is encouraged, with not only earthly reward (having a good health) but also heavenly one (given reward by ALLAH for following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.W).

History of cupping in Islam. The term hijama comes from hajm, which literally means sucking. The practice of hijama involves the application of cups to several points on the skin and the creation of a vacuum by removing the air from the inside of the cups.

During the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.W lifetime, he often practiced hijama and said that it is the best of remedies (the benefits of hijama are already proven, which we will discuss shortly). He also advised his followers to practice hijama as well. Back then, hijama was done by using a horn as the cup. Today, the cups are made from other materials such as silicone or glass although the core principle remains the same.

Types of Hijama

There are two types of hijama, dry and wet. The dry hijama involves only the creation of vacuum and suction of the skin surface. The wet hijama, on the other hand, involves incisions.

Dry Hijama

Dry hijama is practiced on the body or, if there is any, the painful areas. The purpose of dry hijama is to increase blood flow as well as gather the blood in the affected areas. Sometimes, dry hijama is also done in combination with massage. In this treatment, the cups are applied after the skin is oiled using olive oil.

Wet Hijama

The process of wet hijama is more or less the same with dry hijama. The only difference is that wet hijama involves incisions. These incisions are done using a small, sharp blade razor or needle.

From the incisions, harmful blood that contains impurities like toxin will flow. Since wet hijama is must be done carefully, make sure that it is done by a professional therapist to avoid infection.

When to Practice Hijama

Prophet Muhammad taught us that there are times to practice hijama and the times to avoid it. The best dates to practice hijama are these: 17th, 19th and 21st of the lunar month. But if hijama is required for urgent treatment, it is recommended to do hijama immediately without waiting the best date. Hijama cupping on 17, 19 and 21 of the lunar month is recommended to maintain the health of various diseases because at the time the blood is being churned.

Hijama Cupping Benefits in Islam

There are two kinds of hijama cupping benefits in Islam. The first is, of course, the direct health benefits that you will experience. The second one is a heavenly reward from Allah since by practicing hijama we follow what His Messenger taught us.

According to the Prophet, hijama also improves one’s memory. Hijama is a treatment that is directed not only to one’s body but also his mind and soul. With hijama, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual issues can be alleviated. The practice of hijama is relaxing for the patient. It can eliminate depression and anxiety, too.

A Comparison of Hijama or cupping and Acupuncture

Hijama vs Acupuncture

Comparison of Hijama or cupping Therapy and Acupuncture

Alternative forms of therapy or medicine, acupuncture is one of the most common suggestions. Derived from the Latin words acus meaning needle and punctura meaning to puncture. However, theoretically speaking there is more to the complementary therapy than just poking needles into someone and hoping it makes them feel better. Lets understand how acupuncture works. We also hope to cover some of its similarities to Hijama.

Acupuncture Process

Acupuncture Middles

Acupuncture existed for nearly two thousand years, it is a method by which the natural balance of the body is restored. The Chinese believed that the internal balance of the body could be compromised by blockages of the meridians or energy channels which disrupt the flow of Qi – pronounced as chee–or energy. In introduction of west acupuncture was often placed under the label of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TMC and connected to eastern philosophy and spiritual practices. However, acupuncture is very popular.

In order to improve the flow of oxygen, nutrients and blood through the circulatory system, Acupuncture therapists use needles to make blood vessels dilate and stimulate the nervous system, activating nociceptor, sensory nerves and proprioceptor fibres in the process. By doing so, they aim to increase blood flow to specified areas of the body and strengthen nerve signals to the brain, prompting it to release pain killing agents known as opioids. The needles inserted into the skin, at various depths, usually number between five and twenty per session and remain in the body for approximately ten to twenty minutes in order to maximise the desired effects.
In terms of how it affects the body, Acupuncture shares a number of benefits with Hijama. Both therapies aim to improve the flow of blood and oxygen in the body as well as the overall health of its blood vessels, organs and nervous system. Hijama and Acupuncture encourage natural healing and have been known to treat similar health conditions, such as stress, migraines, anxiety, insomnia and general body pain. They are both often preferred as a form of alternative medicine due to the lack of side effects that are otherwise found in the medication prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists.

Hijama or Cupping Therapy

Hijama or Cupping Therapy tends to different from Acupuncture in practice and, at times, in theory too. i.e, during the course of wet cupping treatment, pathogens impeding the cells and blood flow in the body are manually removed and discarded. The process of Acupuncture seems to be closer to dry cupping, wherein blockages of the bodily system are de-constructed and the resulting waste is redirected to the lymphatic drainage system. In terms of how invasive the procedure is, Acupuncture needles appear to penetrate deeper into the the body and are applied one at a time to selected points. In comparison, Hijama practitioners are able to influence structures deep within the body by making shallow and multiple scratches in the surface of the skin. Therefore, it can be considered a slightly less invasive technique. Unlike Acupuncture, most of the bodily mechanisms activated during Hijama can be clearly and scientifically explained.
Though they differ in certain ways, both therapies have benefitted patients and been used alongside each other to treat many different health problems, leaving individuals with a chance to choose the alternative treatment that they are most comfortable to pursue in their own time.

Few Reason You Should Try Hijama or Cupping Therapy

Dry Cupping

Some Reason You Should Try Hijama or Cupping Therapy

Hijama is Arabic word from the root ‘hajm’ which means ‘sucking’, in English, it is known as ‘cupping’. Hijama or Cupping Therapy is a technique that is gaining popularity day by day, presumably this technique is able to cure almost any ailment from joint pains to cancer. As modern medicine has moved forward leaps and bounds the traditional technique of Hijama is still considered better than traditional medicine. Hijama is a sunnat and can be performed on selective day only; however, according to the teachings of Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W) one should have Hijama done on the 17th, 19th and 21st of each month (Islamic Lunar Month).

Wikipedia About Cupping Therapy

Massage

Cupping or Hijama is considered a type of massage and has one key difference, taking out of blood. During the cupping therapy, just like a massage the person feels refreshed and pure, as the therapy helps to remove the infected blood from the body. Here is a explanation of Hijama or Cupping Therapy.

During the process the person will be asked to lie face down on a table or sit in position with their shirt off. After that, transparent cups will be placed on the cupping or hijama point of the body and sucked the particular area of body with the help of vacuum tool. These points have veins that carry dirty blood.
When place on the particular pressure points, the cups suck the skin and make a large blob. After that the person who does Hijama will make a cut on your skin which does not hurt and then place the cup again which will suck all of the bad blood in the cup.

The process is called purifying and helps the body to relax and it is a cure for many infections and diseases.

Detox

In an age where each individual can be seen detoxifying there body to remove the junk from it, Hijama surprisingly does the same thing. In many circumstances such as poor circulation of the blood in our veins, can result in many bacteria and toxins buildup and this can result in severe effects on the body. Hijama can help remove all the impure blood from the body, so that the body is free from toxins and bacteria and is safe from infections. That is why when a person receives cupping therapy they are often asked to drink lots of water to flush away any excess impurities still left in the body.

Anti – aging

Hijama Therapy can help slow down the aging process of the body. It is known to stop this process as it can drastically improve the circulation and improve body functions. The fresh blood that flows through the body actually helps the muscles and our tissues receive the proper oxygen and specific nutrients properly. After a few therapies the body starts to feel relaxed and regain its original strength. Cupping is also done on the face it help to remove the signs of aging from your face.

Healing

Hijama or cupping therapy is mostly used to heal the body, from sore muscles, to inflammation in the body. Usually the inflammation that happens in the body is due to the body trying desperately to cure the injury. Hijama can help draw blood faster to the injured area and new blood vessels are created and healing is quicker. This is the reason why many athletes are seen to use the Hijama or cupping therapy as a way to build muscle tissues and stamina and heal muscle problems.

Health

Hijama or cupping therapy can help remove pains, help the body rejuvenate and get a burst of energy. Cupping can help remove stress and other mental problems as well. Hijama or Cupping can also help relieve depression and anxiety. It is an overall cure which must be tried however, not everyone can do cupping properly therefore, check the authenticity of a cupping expert before taking on the therapy.

10 Things You Should Know About Hijama Cupping Therapy

Athleats

1. Hijama Cupping Therapy is a Sunnah way of Treatment

Narrated by Ibn Majah, on the authority of Ali Radi Allaho Anh that angel JIBREEL advised Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for Hijamah at Akhda’ain (posterior jugulars) and KAHIL (upper back ~ between the shoulders). Amongst all these amazing miracles, Allah the Exalted also ordered the Angels to instruct Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to establish hijama or cupping therapy;

“I did not pass by an Angel from the Angels on the Night Journey except that they all said to me; ‘Upon you is cupping, O Muhammad’” Sahih; Sunan Ibn Majah – 3477

2. The Best of Medicines

Hijama was declared the best of medicines by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), alongside the Quran.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Cupping is the most helpful procedure for human beings to cure themselves.” (Sahih al-Bukhari – 5357)

3. Other Cultures Practice Cupping Therapy, Too

Cupping therapy has been practiced for centuries globally. The first documented medical text was found in 1550 BC in Egypt. Cupping was also discovered in China over 5,000 years ago and is still practiced to this day. It was commonly practiced in the Roman Empire, Islamic Empire, Europe, Russia, Central Asia, South Asia, and the United States. It was very popular during the Middle Ages and 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe. Right now it is most popular in China, Finland, Russia and many Muslim-majority countries.

4. Cupping Therapy vs. Hijama

Cupping therapy is the name of the actual procedure itself. A vacuum is created in a cup and placed on the body. This vacuum causes a negative pressure and pulls the muscles into the cup and therefore, draws the blood to the cupped area. This is known as dry cupping. Then you remove the cup in order to make small, shallow incisions in that same area, before putting the cup back on. This pulls out the toxic blood, acids and excess fluids from the body. This is known as wet, or blood cupping.

But what differentiates hijama is the religious and spiritual aspect of the practice. “Hijama” is the Islamic version of cupping therapy. Muslims practice cupping therapy, in accordance to the way of the Prophet ﷺ. It means that the patient and hijama practitioner should have recite Quran/Dua during the cupping procedure.

5. Hijama Returns the Body to a Normal State

“Hijama” in Arabic literally means “to suck” and to “return to a normal state” of internal balance. It ultimately helps the body to create a balance, healthy alkaline environment by removing acidity. This fixes any problem that the body has, by bringing it to its normal state. Hijama cupping therapy is a holistic, super powerful detox which removes toxic and stagnant blood from your body. It expels negative, unhealthy elements from the body, and allows it to replenish itself.

6. The Medical Benefits

Cupping is an excellent form of preventative and curative therapy. Listed below are some of the ways cupping helps:
1. Boosts the circulatory and immune systems
2. Cleanses and detoxifies the body
3. Treats illness and relaxes the patient
4. Pain relief
5. Fertility
6. Hijama is also useful for treating many muscular, skeletal, neurological, immune, cardio-vascular, respiratory, digestive and urinary issues.

Some of its benefits were highlighted by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him):

Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Cupping on an empty stomach is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorizing….” (Sahih; Sunan Ibn Majah – 3488).

7. It Works On an Emotional Level, Too

Islamic medicine is holistic and works on the levels of mind, body and soul. Hijama cupping therapy is a minor, surgical procedure which has immediate physical effect. However, it also serves to alleviate, mental, emotional, spiritual and metaphysical issues. It is very relaxing and dispels anxiety and depression. According ibn Al Qaiyum, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had Hijama performed upon his head to remove black magic which had been cast upon him;

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentions that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was cupped on his head when he was afflicted with magic and that it is from the best of cures for this if performed correctly. [Zad al-Ma’ad (4/125-126)]

8. There Are Sunnah Points on Your Body

The traditional sunnah points for hijama therapy are on the upper back, which essentially target the heart, lungs, brain and spine. All are major foundations for optimal health.

9. Best Times/Dates of Hijama / Cupping Therapy

Hijama cupping is both a preventative and curative remedy. It is recommended that you should have a cupping detox, and then use hijama as a form of maintenance 2-4 times a year if you are healthy. If you have serious medical conditions, it can be performed more often. It is best to have cupping performed on the “Sunnah Days” according to hadith:

“Whoever performs Hijama cupping in the 17th, 19th and 21st day (of the Islamic Lunar month), then it is a cure for every disease”. (Sahih; Sunan Ibn Majah – 3861).

10. The Hijama Therapist Has a Special Status

Imagine having a career in a blessed profession that the Holy Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has praised himself;
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “If there is anything good in the medicines with which you treat yourselves, it is in the incision of the hijama therapist, or a drink of honey….” (Muslim – 2205)
